On My Watch –

1963
I’m
born to artists in New York City
on the Lower East Side
girl child

1973
I’m
living a child’s life all alone
Vietnam plays on TV
Eat your peas!

1983
I’m
am an actor, seeker, and lover
proclaimed Citizen of the World
embarrassed

1993
I’m
single mother of two, and student
mind opened

2003
We are

sands shifting

2013
We are…
I
awaken

2016
Not I,
Us
Our waking dreams are cold

2017
We are
Fear
Attacked, all that is righteous

We-
WE stand
together
against the hate
against oppression
to make it all better
to barricade the broken dreams
to salve the wounds of those who dare
to strive for lives of joy and happiness

Stand
With us
take my hand
I lay my coat
that you should step
more easily today
never to look back with fear
always walk on with confidence
sure that you will not fall on my watch
sure that we will share many tomorrows

Brown Brick –

            I’ll describe the brown brick

            across from me

black bun ballerina slipping up the stairs

            slick, something I can’t see

And the yellow lights, hazy like honey

and the plump geraniums quivering in shady trees

way too windy for good on this humid summer sunset

dusk, just pink and blue and white

            I wish I’d go blind

            (Am I going blind?!)

It’s too much to see; I must break it in half

There, eyes in half I feel much better staring at brown killed trees.

Mary, you are not the greenest thumb; half greenest thumb; half.
